I've uploaded some custom smilies but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to set in the words that I want the emotes to trigger on. Is there anything I'm doing wrong or is this just a diamond privilage?

They don't work like in Messenger etc.  You can insert them into a message by clicking on the Smiley in the toolbar, then click on the one you want.
